The Wedding Banquet

April 23rd, 2009 — 5:06pm

What a crazy week, but in a good way.

Staff and volunteers from Agora were all over the state last weekend talking to churches and groups about Agora.  Jan and James travelled up to North Lima, OH to spend time at a spaghetti dinner put on by a church as a fundraiser for Agora.  They really enjoyed their time visiting with people and eating spaghetti of course!

Sunday morning Ben and I got an early start and traveled up to Dalton, OH to share at Martins Mennonite Church.  We spoke during the children’s time.  Ben shared a few verses with the children then, I shared with the congregation some information about Agora as well as a summary of our new Saving Change fundraiser.  God placed the following verses on our hearts to share with the congregation and I will share them with you now.

Matthew 22: 8-10

8“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

God spoke to me through these verses last weekend and I have had them in my head all week long.  Firstly it reminded me that I need to continually humble myself before the Lord, unlike the guests who rejected the invitation to dine with the King.  I was reminded that, in my sin, I reject God’s invitation for a better, more fulfilling life.  I am not part of this world, and neither are you;  we are meant for Christ!  Secondly, I was struck by the thought of mission, especially in relation to what Agora does now.  I want to be a part of gathering up the guests, “both good and bad.”  Our dream should be to help fill God’s banquet table with guests.  Whether they look good, smell pretty, or have intense stuggles, all are welcome!  I hope that you are as encouraged and challenged by this passage as I am.  Mission is not reserved for the long-termers who travel over seas; your mission field is just outside your door.  As Christians, our mission is to pour out God’s love on those who walk in dark places.

Praise God!

Prayer Requests

  • Continued prayer for financial needs at Agora
  • That God will continue to open the hearts of the youth and children we serve to receive his love
  • That God will continue to grow our Sunday congregation with parents and families.

Wednesday Night Church

April 16th, 2009 — 3:14pm

Church last night was wonderful!

Within the last couple of weeks several kids who we had not seen at church in quite a while started coming back.  It was so exciting to see them all again!  It was also great to see how excited they were to be back.  It is proof that God answers prayers, because we all prayed often that these children would be able to come back to Agora.

One particular story could not have been anything but God.  Four brothers had been attending Agora every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.  They suddenly stopped coming a few months ago and we found out that they had moved.  It was very sad because they had become a very dear part of our family here and we did not even have a chance to say goodbye.  We also did not know where they moved to or how to contact them.  The volunteers and staff here often talked about how much we missed these boys.

Last week, one of our volunteers, Jess, was at home when her roommate told her that a kid from Agora was just down the street.  Jess went to investigate and found our missing boys getting ice cream at the dairy queen!  It turns out that they live fairly close to her.  We were able to get their number and we hope to see them back at church soon.  The boys were SO excited to find out that they would be able to come back!  Even their mom was happy (with four boys what mom wouldn’t be?)  :)

The coolest part?  Just a day or two before this happened I prayed  that God would let us see these boys again, that miraculously we would be able to find them.  I know others were praying with me as well.  The Lord answers prayers!

Continue to keep us in your prayers because God hears them!

Prayer requests:

  • A young man who attends Agora was severely injured last weekend.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers as he recovers.  Also pray that God might use this to speak to this young man
  • Financial need at Agora
  • The staff and volunteers at Agora.  Also pray for the volunteers that will be arriving this summer as they prepare to leave their families for a year or more.
