Busy, busy, busy!

July 23rd, 2009 — 2:56pm

It has been 3 weeks since my last update and a lot has happened since then.

Trinity Christian Fellowship served here (I mentioned that they were here in the last blog).  We had a wonderful week with their group of 18 youth and adults.  Not to mention the fact that the group really accomplished a lot.  Two of the houses Agora renovated as part of its job training program are sparkling clean and ready to show.  Please pray that these houses will sell.  Also, a dilapidated addition on the back of one of the volunteer houses was torn down and the footer dug to prepare for rebuilding.  A huge praise from the girls house was that part of the group spent time putting up a privacy fence at our house!  We love it and are so thankful!  Aside from the work projects, the group was a huge blessing to our kids.  Our kids loved having so many new people to spend time with and they especially loved getting so much attention! :)

Last week was back to the normal schedule.  We all had to sit down and face the amount of work that we still have to do for the child care center.  I think everyone was feeling overwhelmed.  In general, the week ended up being difficult and stressful.  Please keep us in your prayers.  Seeing the huge amount of money we need to complete this project as well as the enormous tasks that need to be completed by October is overwhelming.  We really need everyone’s prayers and support through this time.  Despite the stress, we all know that this is God’s will for Agora and we are so excited to see what doors he opens for us!  Just pray that they journey there goes smoothly.

One huge blessing from last week was the arrival of a new volunteer from Germany.  Ina has already become a part of our Agora family.  The kids love her and she is already extablishing relationships.  With Ina, we now have a total of 12 resident volunteers!  Isn’t that amazing?  Just three years ago Agora had 1 resident volunteer.  Two years ago Agora had a team of 4, now we have 12!  That number doesn’t even include all the part time volunteers that give time on church nights and throughout the week.  What a blessing!

Thanks again for all the prayers and support!  I have been asking for prayer that parents will start coming to church.  Praise the Lord!  Last night a Mom walked her kids to church through the rain because they missed the van.  She stayed for the whole service.  Keep praying for her that God will transform her life.

Prayer Requests

  • That parents will continue to take interest in church
  • Day care funding
  • Selling houses
  • Peace of God in the midst of stress

Hello Again!

July 9th, 2009 — 3:43pm

Firstly I need to apologize for taking so long to update the blog.  Agora has been a whirlwind of activity for the past 3 weeks and this blog was lost in the shuffle… Sorry!

Now, on to the updates!  Agora was blessed with 3 new volunteers on June 28th.  Two young men, Paul and Lukas, and a young lady, Nicole, arrived from Germany.  They have already been a huge blessing to Agora.  They arrived in time for a VERY busy week (more on that to come) but they took it in stride and jumped right in.  They have already become a dear part of our Agora family.

So, about last week.  The Mennonite Youth Convention took place here in Columbus last week.  We were fortunate enough to have many opportunities to share our ministry with people throughout the week.  The convention made Agora a service project site for the week and we were blessed with 27 volunteers last Tuesday and over 100 volunteers everyday after that!  It was a lot of work, but it was fun.  The volunteers did a great job and we were so blessed by all the work that they accomplished.  Also, we took many of the groups out into the community to to service work among the families we work with. Groups spent the afternoons weeding, picking up trash, and offering their help to families.  Everywhere we went, people were so surprised and blessed that strangers came to help them.  The comment that we heard over and over was, “No one around here helps each other, this is so wonderful!”  Those comments made all of us see the value of simply blessing others with our actions.  We may be the only kind word or action that someone receives.

One particular incident really struck me as we worked in the community.  On Saturday, we took 5 groups of people (about 80 people) into the community that the full-time volunteers at Agora live.  It happens to be a rougher section and we have had little luck getting the kids in the area to come to Agora.  The full-time volunteers decided that it would be awesome if we swarmed our neighborhood with people offering help to our neighbors.  We were not disappointed!  It was amazing to see all up and down the streets of our little neighborhood, groups of people picking up trash, pulling weeds, playing with kids, and sitting on porches talking with parents.  Two little girls even cried when we left their house.  Last night 15 new kids from that neighborhood came to church!  Please take a moment right now to thank God and pray that those kids will keep coming.  But wait, that isn’t all!  There were several other new kids as well!  It was a wonderful night and we were all so excited to see so many smiling new faces.

This week was off to a busy start again :) The staff and volunteers did take a break on Tuesday.  We spent the day at Alum Creek swimming, tubing, water skiing, fishing, and relaxing.  It was a beautiful day and everyone really enjoyed it.  Last night, the youth group from Trinity Christian Fellowship in Millersburg, OH arrived to serve for the rest of the week and weekend.  We got a good start this morning and everyone seems to be having fun.  Part of the group is cleaning a house that Agora restored through our job-training program and is currently trying to sell.  The other half of the group is tearing a dilapidated addition off the back of the guys volunteer house.  Please keep this group in your prayers.  Pray for safety and that they will grow closer to God by serving him this week.

I have a huge praise item.  Thank you for all your prayers for the day care.  Today our plans were approved and we received our building permits so we are all set to move ahead with our work!

Well, that is all for now.  I know it was alot!  Thanks for all your prayers and keep in touch!

Prayer Requests

  • that many more new kids will keep coming
  • new chairs for our facility
  • that parents of our kids will come
