He works all things for good

September 25th, 2009 — 9:06pm

I apologize for the long delay in posts!

There is so much to share I am not even sure where to begin. Construction on Little Gems continues to come along.  Every week the church looks different!  We are entering the final phase of the project which is very exciting.  At the same time we have a lot of needs.  Before we can be licensed we must furnish the entire childcare which includes everything from cribs to shelves to play equipment.  It goes without saying that this is an incredible expense.  We know that God will provide, he always does!  Nevertheless, we cherish your prayers for this need.

The past few church nights have been rough ones.  There have been ongoing fights between several of the kids because of different problems that originated at home or school.  I guess I should explain a little about our experience with fights at Agora.  While we have all the normal drama, tattling, and teasing that goes on in any school, home, (or even church!), fights at Agora usually stem from something worse.  A child who has perhaps never been taught to control their anger will lash out in unexpected and sometimes violent ways.  Another possibility is that the “drama” is actually true.  We have heard plenty of kids and teens make fun of each other for awful things that we later found out were real problems that these kids were dealing with.   The good news is that we have been able to work through a lot of the arguments (some have taken a few weeks) and have seen God begin to work in the lives of some of the children.  On the downside, our eyes have been opened to just how horrific the lives of these kids are.  Abuse, neglect, lack of education, anger, and rage are all some of the things that have “slapped us in the face” this week.  It isn’t that we didn’t know that our kids faced these difficulties, it is just somehow terribly different when you put a face with the pain.  Each time this happens to us is as awful as the time before.  What do you say to the child?  What do you do?  Pastor Rich talked with the staff here about all these things today.  We have committed to pray and pour out love on these children.  Please join us.  There are many children at Agora that are facing tremedous difficulties.

Romans 8:28 NIV

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Do we realize the depth of this verse?  All things for good.  I know for myself, I often have a hard time believing that there will be good when I face a tough situation.  It is hard to praise God in those times.  But God calls us to praise him in all things, and he deserves our praise too.  When we choose to seek God, believe his promises, and praise him for the good we know he does and will do we will find ourselves walking in peace and joy– conquerors.

Prayer Requests

  • Parents of our kids.  Pray that they will miraculously experience Christ.
  • The children
  • Little Gems Early Learning & Childcare- continued construction, funding as we reach the final phase

  • There is a young girl at Agora in need of a violin for school.  If you have one that you no longer use and would like to get rid of please contact us!

Do Good!

September 10th, 2009 — 6:02pm

The childcare center is really coming along!  Pastor Rich lost his office this week.  They torn it down and built the new walls in one day.  It is really cool to see how much work is being done.  The Agora construction crew works so hard.  Great job guys!

We had Wednesday night church yesterday.  It went really great!  There were so many kids there.  We all had a wonderful time playing with the kids and showing them God’s love.  I was really blessed to be able to spend some time with some of the preteen girls (definitely the most difficult group).  We had a good time chatting about school and church.  During the teen and adult Bible study Pastor Rich continued a discussion that was started last week.  We have been talking about the affect that movies, music, and all kids of media have on us.  This was a really “hot” topic for all of us.  Think about how many songs and movies we absorb that don’t glorify God.  We were all challenged to consider the impact that the media we take in has on us.  Pastor Rich wrapped up his challege with James 4:17, “Anyone then, who knows the good he ought to do and does not do it, sins.”  He asked us to consider what good God may have for us to do while we are instead absorbing information that does not glorify Him.  Now that is something to think about!  When I consider just how much God wants from me I realize how much more growing I have to do.  Even more amazing, He loves me right where I am now!  Despite being so far from all that He has for me, God still pours out his love on me.  And on you too!

We want to say a big thank you to all the churches that donated school supplies.  We passed them all out last night.  The kids were ecstatic!  Many of them had no supplies prior to last night.  Thank you!!!

Well, that wraps up this post.  Remember to keep in touch and keep praying!

Prayer Request

  • Funding for the childcare center– HUGE need!
  • Staff and Volunteers as they deal with a lot of stress and pressure

  • Monetary donations to put toward the childcare center
  • Repairs/remodeling projects in both volunteer houses

Back to school and back to church

September 3rd, 2009 — 1:34pm

We had Wednesday night church last night for the first time in two weeks.  What a blast!  It was so much fun to see the kids again.  They were all so happy to be back at church, which was a huge blessing and encouragement.  I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to have a van load of kids come racing into church, yelling your name and tackling you with hugs.  You will just have to come experience it for yourself sometime!  :) The night went so well too.  Sometimes the kids don’t behave well when they haven’t been to church for a while because they forget the rules, but we all spent time in prayer and the Lord answered.  The kids were great and we had no problems.

Switching topics, please continue to pray for our ministry.  This transition period is very exciting but also very difficult.  We would really appreciate your prayers for our finances.  We believe that God has called us to start Little Gems Early Learning and Childcare in order to further our outreach, but money is a huge concern.  We know God will provide so we ask you to join with us in prayer for our needs.  Thank you!

Well the last two weeks have been a bit different for Agora.  Rich, Becky, their family, myself, and three other volunteers traveled to Germany for two weeks.  Two former German volunteers were married on the 22nd and they asked Rich to do the wedding for them.  It was a beautiful wedding and quite different from an American wedding.  We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves (and the food!).  Congratulations Anton and Lena!  After the wedding, we spent one week traveling around Germany.  It was a wonderful trip for all of us.  We all enjoyed seeing our German friends again, meeting their families, and seeing how they live.

On the down side, Agora had to say goodbye to two volunteers.  Jan and Joanna’s terms ended August 18th.  Jan served at Agora for 2 years.  He invested a tremendous amount of time into our job training program and building Little Gems Early Learning and Childcare.  He was also our resident soccer star and the kids loved learning to play soccer from him.  Joanna worked hard in our bakery doing job training and making orders.  She also drove the van on church nights to pick up kids.  Joanna brought alot of laughter and joy to Agora; she has  gift for being joyful even in hard situations.  Needless to say, Jan and Jo are already missed.  Thanks guys for your service!!!

Prayer Requests

  • Little Gems Early Learning and Childcare
  • Church tomorrow night
  • Jan and Joanna as they adjust to life in Germany again.
