A Quick Update

February 19th, 2010 — 3:23pm

I hope that this post finds everyone safe and enjoying our first sunny day in quite some time!  I know I am, this weather is absolutely beautiful.  With that said, I did love the snow (and the day off of classes).  Sadly we were unable to have church this past Wednesday.  The residential streets on the Hilltop and in the Bottoms were still very icy and in some case nearly impassable so we decided it was not safe enough to be transporting 120 children through those streets.  We all miss the kids and are looking forward to having church tomorrow night!

This week has been very busy for everyone working on the childcare center.  We had a couple of inspections this week and one big final inspection coming up on Monday.  Please say a prayer that everything will go as planned and that we will pass the inspection!  Some people have been busy cleaning classrooms and most of the room are now sparkling clean.  Also, we started putting furniture together.  A few of the rooms are all set up, how exciting!  I love walking into the rooms and imagining them full of children.

A huge blessing this week was the donation of Sunday School curriculum.  The Sunday School teachers at Agora are so thankful to the family that purchased and donated wonderful Sunday School curriculum.  We have been in need of this for quite some time.  We often looked into buying some or creating our own, but never had the money or time to do either.  Thanks again!

Thank you for all your continued prayers and support.  It is greatly appreciated!

Philippians 4:13

February 11th, 2010 — 9:55am

I apologize for the long time between updates!  Since Christmas, things at Agora have just been so busy (check out the childcare update videos) and I have not done a very good job of staying on top of our updates.

So here is an update!

One of our volunteers, Nils Ruppel, returned to Germany on January 18th.  It was really difficult to see him go, but we know that God has amazing plans for him back home.  God has provided Agora with remarkable volunteers and Nils was no exception.  We already miss him so much!  Please keep Nils in your prayers; adjusting to life back home is difficult for every volunteer and they need to be surrounded by prayer.

On a more exciting note, two of our volunteers became engaged to each other over Christmas.  Josh and Anna are busy planning their summer wedding.  Keep them in your prayers as well!

Church nights have been very busy for us.  We consistently have 120 children coming for church and we are thrilled about it!  We made some adjustments to our program that have made a huge difference.  Becky now teaches a children’s class on Saturday nights for children in the 1st grade or below.  The children love it!  We also solved some transportation issues that have enable us to get children home earlier on school nights.  In addition, the staff have been able to get home by 10:30 most church nights.  What a blessing!  We used to get home around 11:30.

Another exciting addition to church has been a Bible memory program.  Children can memorize a verse and receive a small prize each time.  It is incredible how much the children love this!  Each week a group of children line up to recite their verses.  Some of the recently memorized verses are Galatians 5:22-23, Philippians 4:13, Matthew 21:22, and Matthew 4:4.

There are some very exciting stories to share as well.  Becky (Pastor Rich’s wife) does a great deal of ministry work with women in our community, mostly mother’s of children who come to Agora.  As you know this is a huge deal; many of our children go home from church to parents that do not know the Lord.  When we see parents decide to live for Christ we often see changes in the child’s life follow.  Becky began leading a weekly Bible study with  a group of women in the fall.  Please keep this in your prayers.  The Enemy is always eager to disrupt and we have seen him at work trying to disrupt this Bible study.  Please take time to pray for this ministry that Becky is doing.

Last week was so exciting!  Becky has been visiting one mother whose 3 children all come to Agora.  Two her children have severe behavior problems beyond anything that we have ever seen before.  We are committed to working with the children, but many times we have felt overwhelmed.  One of the boys seems to be particularly distressed when we speak to him of God’s love for him.  He often responds by screaming at us, swearing, and saying that, “Jesus hates him.”  With that said there have been moments of victory and we do see improvements.  We continue to pray for the children and discover how we can work with them better.  As I was saying, Becky has been visiting the mother and getting to know her better.  Last week, the mother recommitted her life to Christ!  Isn’t it amazing how God works?  We pray for a breakthrough with the children and God responds by working in the mother’s life too!  Please keep this mother and her children in your prayers, they have many struggles and often feel overwhelmed, but we know that our God is greater than all those things!  Pray that she will find comfort in the truth and learn to rely on Christ for her strength!

To close I would like to leave you with a verse that some of our children have memorized.  It is a short verse, but one full of truth and encouragement.

Philippians 4:13

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Our renovations are winding down, and we need equipment to use in the childcare center. We already received generous donations that helped in stocking the childcare center with equipment and toys, but we still need a bit more to open our doors. If you are willing and able to help, please either take the time to find a great deal at the local thrift store, or if you have the resources please take advantage of our registries with the following stores:

Here are the links to the Flier and List files, respectively:
